Tokyo’s Living Architecture
Sustainable architecture is now a major theme in Tokyo, from preserving historic buildings to using wood and reusing existing materials. But the idea of treating buildings as part of a resource cycle can already be seen in Edo.
Wooden buildings in Edo did not simply vanish when they were taken apart. Through wood joinery that used few nails, structures could be dismantled, and pillars or beams could move on to another building. Old timber was bought and sold, giving architectural materials many more lives. In this way, the city already had a practical system for passing materials forward.
Today, that spirit appears in many forms: cultural facilities that preserve older buildings, reuse projects that give existing materials new value, and timber architecture that reconnects the city with wood. Tokyo’s sustainable future is not separate from Edo. It is building on an older habit of repair, reuse, and renewal.
