Talk Session: Cooling Off in Summer in Edo
The session will explore "Cooling Off in Summer in Edo" from three perspectives: attire, literature, and ukiyo-e.
Facilitator: Masumi Horiguchi (Edo Customs and Culture Researcher)

Panelist: Masako Fukushima (Professor, Gakushuin University)
Lecture: Summer Attire — Edo Yukata —
Comment: Yukata is a refreshing attire that evokes seasonal elegance, offering a casual way to enjoy traditional Japanese Kimono. I hope this session provides an enjoyable opportunity to learn about the charm of yukata.

Panelist: Fumiko Kobayashi (Professor, Hosei University)
Lecture: The Sumida River and Edo Literature
Comment: How did Hiraga Gennai, Ota Nanpo, and others—featured in last year's Taiga Drama "Berabō: Tsutajū Eiga no Yume Banashi"—depict the Sumida River? Whether you watched the drama or not, I hope you enjoy reminiscing about the ambiance of the Sumida River in days past.

Panelist: Satomi Ishikuma (Curator, Edo-Tokyo Museum)
Lecture: Exploring the Summer of the Sumida River through Ukiyo-e
Comment: We hope you enjoy discovering how the people of Edo spent their lively summers through the ukiyo-e works in our collection. Let’s explore together why "Summer on the Sumida River" has always been so exhilarating, both in the past and now.
